What's the deal with couches on the porch?
Long story short: some people in the city want to ban them, but it's not the law yet. I've written a lengthy diatribe opposing a proposed ban and emailed city council, I encourage you do to do the same: here's how to contact them.

Yochi's Rant
I just posted on my blog something Yochi sent me about Mich House's continuing noise violation issues. Go post comments, as a former resident I'll be doing my best to attack the noise ordinance on the Cool Cities Task Force.

One Last Rant
Hey guys, here's a list of the information I've been meaning to send out. Bethany has volunteered to be Interim Manager for Mich House, so she's your primary contact for the next week as you move in and out of Mich House.

Her email is souleb AT umich DOT edu if you need to get in touch with her. She's been putting together & up all of the information that people need this week, and she's even sacrificed a weekend trip to go see her brother down in Missouri so that she can take care of yall who are moving in this weekend. - So Mad Props to her.

She lives in Minnies, in Room 6 (I think). If not, I'm sorry whoever lives in Minnies Room 6. If you can't find her, I'm Sat, in Room 5 at Mich, until Sunday, when I leave forever for NYC - I can also help if you have any questions (or Ben, in Room 4 at Mich). You may call the house at 734.996.5952. You probably won't get through to anybody. Call Minnies instead, at 734.996.5950. They have voicemail. Somebody might even return your call.

Please Do sign up for a work shift on the work schedule up on the wall in the Mich House Dining Room when you move in and pick up your keys. Dinner Clean volunteers are much appreciated. There's a marker above the work schedule, so I don't want to hear any of those "I couldn't find a marker/pencil/writing implement/any old dirty implement you could drag across the work schedule to write your name in" excuses.

If you don't find anybody home, please just come back later in the day, or go over to Minnies next door and see if anybody is there to let you in.

Also -there's a bunch of new light switches up in the pantry, next to the maintenance closet, and in the kitchen. Those switches should stay on Auto, not ON or OFF. Thank you for helping us save energy.

In regards to the tumult of moving in - Minnies was burglarized yesterday, likely on account of somebody leaving the front door open (That happens at Mich all the time too). I will be calling the lock smith to get the front doors of our houses rekeyed next week (It's been over 4 years, it should happen every two years). Please keep the front doors to both houses locked, please make sure that the windows in the firswt floors to both houses have pin locks in them. And please make sure that the kitchen door to mich stays closed at night. This interim time period between terms is when MANY MANY burglaries occur across Ann Arbor. Let's keep our houses safe. If you see somebody you don't recognize, ask them who they are, and who they know at the house, and what room the person they are here to visit lives in. It's not rude - it is YOUR house. Burglars tend to come up and knock on people's doors to see if anybody's home, and then make up lame excuses for why they are there if they do find people home. I've also heard the "I'm here to see ____ (who you've never heard of)." Or in the case of people stealing our returnables containers: "_____ said that I could take this [at 6 in the morning on a saturday morning]. That's right. Call Shenannigans.

One last thing before I take my leave of you - please as sister houses discuss at your earliest convenience sharing the front door keys to both houses between all of you as we rekey the houses. I'm willing to say that it's been a dumb struggle for the past several years, and that many of us at Mich end up getting keys to Minnies through "illegitimate" means anyways. We're all housemates here.

Besides Minniesites, Mich wants to contribute to replace the old Piano in your basement that we can all share.

Have a wonderful time in the Mich Minnies Empire, and I hope that someday you look at the people moving into your house as you leave, remembering that hot summer week that you yourselves moved into Mich House, with as much fondness as I do now.

Talent Show video
From: Ben Chess
To: michhouse
Subject: Talent Show video

For those of yall who wear fanny packs,

The 99th Mich House Talent Show (brought to you by the crappy iSight
camera, available in apple stores everywhere) is online. The recording
stopped after about the first hour, because we had chewed through
6.5gigs and I ran out of disk space. That gives us footage from the
beginning all the way through to Adam's second performance: a
heart-wrenching solo of Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" To all of
those who poured their hearts out in jokes songs and monologues
thereafter, I'm sorry.

Anyway, the video is now available exclusively on Coop-Vision(tm). It
will only work inside the house, and you'll need DivX software on your
system (http://www.divx.com). Once you think you're ready, point your
browser to http://192.168.1.1/talentshowsummer03.avi

T-shirts, mugs, and $9.99 videos will be available shortly.

Ben

p.s. maybe eric can burn us a VCD for the technically impaired?
